Meet Our Team! Nikki Derome: Foreman

How long have you worked at Soep? Over 21 years

What do you feel is unique about working at Soep? There are a lot of people that stay with Soep for their entire career; from apprenticeship to retirement. That says a lot about the company.

What is the most memorable project you’ve been involved with at Soep? Some of my favorites are the projects where I got to use my art background. Genzyme had a “cloud” design that I got to lay out and spray onto the ceilings. At "The Brain” at MIT, I sprayed a gradual color design throughout the open atrium. From an Architectural standpoint, it was amazing to paint Frank Gehry’s design at MIT’s Stata Building. The addition at the MFA. How many of my fellow Mass Art grads have paintings in the MFA? The new Target store on Boylston St.: you can see the gray and white panels I painted from the street as you walk or drive by. This gives me a great sense of pride.

How is your role critical to the strategic vision and success of Soep? As one of the few female foremen in the trades it means a lot to me to have the opportunity to break stereotypes and to lead by example. I love what I do. If your intention is to earn a living doing something you enjoy, as I have been so fortunate to have done; you find it is a win-win situation for you, your employer, and the clients.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your job? The craft! There is nothing like a crisp cut line of an accent wall. I also enjoy trying to figure out the most efficient steps to completing a specific task; kind of like playing chess.

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me… Well right now training for my 10th consecutive Boston Marathon! During the summer months, I’m training for Triathlons. Also you will find me coming up with a home cooked menu for the week and then cooking with my wife. Playing with our two kittens Tilly and Lilly.

Which of Soep’s Core Values do you feel is the most critical to the company’s success? The company was built on Ben Soep’s passion for the trade. It has a good foundation and this attitude lives on in team members like myself.
